Cantores Cleveland is celebrating ten years as a professional vocal ensemble that performs both sacred and secular music a cappella from the middle ages through today β by ceasing to exist.
OK, not exactly. In fact, the group is in the process of changing its name to Contrapunctus, a change that will be fully complete by the end of February when all traffic is directed to its new website location.
Itβs also been named ensemble in residence at Trinity Cathedral downtown where it will continue, under the direction of musical director (and countertenor) David Acres and executive director (and soprano) Judith Overcash, to mount programs that explore the music, culture and arts of different centuries.
The first concert of this new era is βThe Life & Times of Mary Queen of Scots (1542-1587),β taking place at Trinity. In it, the ensemble will immerse itself in the turbulent times and intrigue-filled life of this mid-16th-century royal, interjecting her letters and prayers between music of composers of that period like Giovanni Palestrina, Thomas Tallis, William Byrd, and others from England, Spain, France, and the Netherlands.
Tickets are $20 for reserved seating, $15 for general admission, and $10 for students.
