Thirty-year-old German violinist Julia Fischer is hot stuff.
Yeah, she’s got a ton of the sexy and glamorous photos that seem to be de rigeur for young concert musicians these days.
But she’s also hot stuff musically. You don’t win numerous international competitions because you’ve got form-fitting, low-cut gowns and lush, tumbling locks. And those things won’t snag you invitations to play with the Cleveland Orchestra, as Fischer will be doing in four concerts this week.
Despite her youth, she’s got 11 CDs out, with music by Vivaldi, Bach, Mozart, Tchaikovsky, and Brahms. It’s Brahms’ Violin Concerto she’ll be tackling with the orchestra, as music director Franz Welser-Möst conducts.
Devoted Brahms fans will have to go to Severance Hall twice this weekend. Although Fischer will play the concerto at all four concerts, the rest of the program will change. Thursday’s and Friday’s will also include Brahms Academic Festival Overture and his Symphony No. 4. The Saturday and Sunday programs will feature his Tragic Overture and Symphony No. 2.
Tickets are $31-$162. On January 10 and 12, young people 7-17 are free, with one free admission per each adult ticket. Student tickets are $10.
