The Lighthouse and the Whaler Work Up Special Holiday Show to Play @GrogShop

Fri 12/20 @ 9PM

Folk-rock band The Lighthouse and the Whaler are one of a bunch of northeast Ohio indie bands starting to garner national attention. The fall 2012 release of their album This Is an Adventure has kept them busy this year.

But not too busy to put together a very special Christmas show with their friends from Cleveland’s Humble Home and singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalism Morgan Mecaskey.

They’ve dubbed what they’ve come up with “The Story of Christmas,” and they’ve been rehearsing it since September. (There’s “making of” video on TLATW website about the rehearsal process). Obviously, they’re not just going to throw some holiday chestnuts randomly into a regular set.

Instead, the combined group of musicians picked eight tunes to work up together. At the two-hour show at the Grog Shop, they’ll intersperse these songs with short sets by each individual act(25 minutes for Mecaskey and Humble Home, 35 minutes for TLATW), winding up the show with several Christmas songs played as a superband. They explain it all here.

The band posted, “We want the show to be more than just, well, a show. We as a group want it to embody the spirit of what we collectively believe Christmas represents. So we decided to take all the proceeds from the show and donate to families who otherwise would not be able to have a Christmas for one reason or another.”

The money they take in will be donated to Solon-based The Littlest Heroes, which helps families dealing with children with cancer.

Tickets are $12 in advance (a good idea given the growing popularity of TLATW), $15 at the door if it’s not sold out.
