Embrace

12.11-12.18.13
Embrace

It’s the season to embrace what you love, and those you love. We’re in love with Cleveland, its people, and its spirit. Here’s what we are embracing this week:

An outstanding collaboration is evident in DayGlo2: Show Your Colors, where Doubting Thomas gallery, DayGlo Corp, and 50 local artists are teaming up for an event tied in with the Tremont Art Walk. If you go, stop over to Jean Brandt’s gallery for Dana Depew’s Small Works, all priced at $100 or less.

Winter is here, regardless of what the calendar says, and it’s time to embrace our year-round outdoor activities, says columnist Joe Baur. It’s also time to show up and express yourself about the Opportunity Corridor this weekend, since ODOT has only scheduled one other public meeting since 2011. And Mansfield comments on the tokenism obvious in one of our most high-profile holiday displays.

Holiday pop-ups rule: 78th Street Studios is the place to be for two huge holiday shows, and two more over at Breakneck, while Pop-Up Shaker and Gordon Square embrace the trend. Lots of holiday shows to keep you warm & entertained: everything from Peter Pan at Heights Youth Theatre to the adults-only White Reindeer at Cinematheque, to Godspell at Blank Canvas. Check our ShopLOCAL guide for all the pop-ups… and coffee shops and vintage clothing and edibles & sweets…

Embrace our region by using our mobile app and you could win a t-shirt or free publicity for your favorite event. That’s worth a hug. –Thomas Mulready

Cleveland Shows Its True Colors
DayGlo 2 @ Doubting Thomas

The best things happen in this town when our creative, industrious citizens and our community-conscious, local businesses come together to collaborate on something special for each other and the city as a whole.

This weekend’s Dayglo2: Show Your Colors is a perfect example…

Concerned About Opportunity Corridor?
Make it to one of these meetings

The Opportunity Corridor is one of the most controversial proposed public projects in the region in years.

Supporters and many public officials claim it’s necessary to our community’s economic development, while many members of the community think it’s a waste of money.

Yet ODOT has held only one public meeting since 2011. In response, Clevelanders for Transportation Equality, a grassroots citizens group, is organizing two public meetings this weekend…

Americans, for reasons unbeknownst to me, feel entitled to climate control.

Whether it’s skywalks in Atlanta to avoid the heat or reasons given for Cleveland’s new casino skywalk, something seems to have happened over the past 50 years of urban development that made Americans incapable of withstanding the natural elements of their home region…

Toilets and radiator valves aren’t that much fun to talk about, except my dad thought they were.

He rambled on about valves and ballcocks. He owned apartment buildings in Lakewood…

Peter Lawson Jones

Impressive Storyteller… thanks for keeping it real!
Nancy Nolan-Jones

Awesome story, Mr. Mansfield. The best I’ve ever read from you…
Allen Freeman

Great story, kinda biblical in a way. Covering redemption, trust, and faith in our fellow man. I think that somewhere in our 20s our spots are set. Sometimes they just get a little dirty or dingy, but with a warm shower, nap, and a hot meal the spots become crystal clear again…
Johnny E Hamm

Excellent story; I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Frazier this past Saturday. And this reminds me to keep my word and track down his pieces on The Daily Beast…
Joe Harbert

Ditto to the above comments. Mansfield is a great writer. Amazingly, he is a better storyteller and speaker than he is a writer. Anyone who has the ability to meet, listen to, or help Mansfield Frazier — do it! And do it ASAP. You won’t be sorry.

ROLDO: Brent Larkin’s Fake-Out Move I will never forget attending a panel on the media at which Tom Fladung (who was brand new to the PD at the time so maybe he didn’t quite understand the depth of irony in his statement) said that “the role of the Plain Dealer is to be a voice for the voiceless,” and the entire room exploded in laughter….
Anastasia Pantsios

I read Larkin’s editorial last week and came to the exact same conclusion by the end (and even commented as such below the story): Larkin’s outrage is way too late, the PD should have been 60pt headlining this story on the front page for weeks prior to the Council vote, and it’s all a setup for the absurdity of the sin tax ballot initiative…
