Baldwin Wallace University presents a special production of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Carousel. Directed by Scott Plate, this two-piano reduction was created by Richard Rodgers himself. BW’s stripped-down rendition will be performed in the round – with the audience completely surrounding the cast on all sides of the intimate William Allman Theater. This version will focus on the raw beauty of the music and story.
Carousel barker Billy Bigelow’s romance with millworker Julie Jordan comes at the price of both their jobs. When he learns she is carrying his child, he attempts a robbery to provide for them both. After it goes awry and Billy dies, he is given a chance in the hereafter by a kindly Starkeeper to return to earth to set things right.
“The goal of the production,” according to Director Scott Plate, “is to show the characters as they are, hardships and all. Heaven appears in the play as a reward for earth’s trials, and as an opportunity to atone for mistakes. The hard effort of life on earth holds the promise of something finer.”
Plate is Department Chair of Music Theatre at BW, and is an award-winning freelance actor and director whose work is featured frequently on Northeast Ohio’s stages.
Tickets for Carousel are $25 for General Admission, $20 for Seniors and $10 for Non-BW Students. Due to the intimate theater capacity, BW recommends buying your tickets early. To purchase tickets, visit the BW box office at Kleist Center or call 440-826-2240.
