Tremont’ s Professor Avenue Streetscape Project is nearing completion. The final component is an outdoor public sculpture by local artist Olga Ziemeska. Dendrite was inspired by Tremont’s street names Professor, Literary, University and College – reminiscent of the neighborhood’s “college town” past. Ziemeska began thinking about creating a public sculpture (and a public space) for contemplation, observation and interaction for the community – like the space a university provides its students and surrounding community.
The title, Dendrite, refers to the tree-like branching process that occurs in our brain, as well as many other places throughout nature. In her work, Ziemeska often makes connections between visible and invisible patterns in nature and correlates them to the human body to create work that shows how humans and nature are seamlessly connected.
The public is invited to watch the final stages of the work’s completion this weekend during Friday’s Tremont Art Walk and the following day. The completed work will be installed this December in a new plaza at the corner of West 10th Street and Professor Avenue – across from Fifth Third Bank.
Funds for this project were generated by the City of Cleveland’s Public Art Program, which requires larger capital projects undertaken by the city to set aside 1.5% of the projects’ construction budget toward public art. Tremont West Development Corporation obtained additional public art funding through the Federal Transportation Enhancements Program.
This event is free and open to the public. Open studio hours are Friday 3-9pm and Saturday 10am-5pm at Prosper Park, 2410 Scranton Road. For those arriving by car, a large parking lot is located at the south-west corner of Scranton Road and Willey/Kenilworth Avenues. “Like” Olga Ziemeska Studio on Facebook to follow all the progress leading up to the final installation.
