Aimee Mann, Ted Leo Collaboration at the Kent Stage

Mon 10/14 @ 8PM

Til Tuesday was one of an army of ’80s new wave bands who had one striking hit and quickly vanished. That hit was the eruptive “Voices Carry,” a statement of interpersonal oppression and liberation made stronger by its memorable video.

But singer/bassist Aimee Mann has had a long afterlife. The band broke up a just a couple of years after that 1985 hit. But Mann has out a series of albums featuring her morose, self-reflective tunes about complicated relationships. He latest is last year’s Charmed. She says the underlying theme of the album is narcissism.

She says in her press release for the album, “It was a thing that I kept coming back to, because I do think people who are super-charming are really interesting. And I see how charm is on a continuum that goes all the way from people who can talk you out of anything to people who are manipulative to people who are almost a little sinister. They’re usually people who you really like being around in the beginning, because they’re really good at creating an impression that perhaps is tailor-made for you, and that’s very seductive.”

It’s got a much bigger sound than most of her singer/songwriter style post-’Til Tuesday work, and even had echoes of the new wave era that launched her.

She’s recently formed a collaboration with punk rocker Ted Leo called Both, with an album in the works for next year. He will join her for a show at the Kent Stage.

Tickets are $20-$35.
