Folk Duo Magpie Celebrates 40th Anniversary at the Kent Stage

Sun 9/15 @ 7PM

In their 40 years performing together, the duo of Greg Artzner and Terry Leonino, who call themselves Magpie, have become a fixture on the folk scene, both in their home base of Washington D.C. and beyond.

Combining Leonino’s versatile vocals, which incorporate influences from blues and jazz, as well as her instrumental skills on guitar, mandolin, harmonica, and dulcimer, and Artzner’s impressive fingerpicking guitar skills and his sympathetic baritone, the pair has tackled a range of traditional and contemporary country, blues, jazz, swing, pop, and folk tunes from around the world.

They also continue the Woody Guthrie/Pete Seeger/Phil Ochs folk tradition of progressive activism. Artzner’s family was active in the ’60s civil rights movement. Leonino winesses the May 4, 1970 shootings a Kent Stage. While travelling to folk festivals, clubs, and educational institutions around the world, they’ve been active in advocating for peace, social justice, civil rights, and environmental causes.

When Magpie celebrates their 40th anniversary as a musical collaboration at the Kent Stage, the show will have a special meaning: they first played together in Ken in September 1973 when Leonino was a senior there. They moved to the D.C. area following her graduation in 1974.

They’ll be joined at the Kent Stage by noted fingerpicking guitarist Rolly Brown.

Tickets are $15 in advance, $18 day of show.
