Re-formed Kinsman Dazz Bring Old-School Soul and Funk to the Beachland

Fri 8/23 @ 8PM

Cleveland funk group the Dazz Band enjoyed national success in the early ’80s with hits like “Let It Whip” and “Joystick.”

But before that, they were Kinsman Dazz named after a major thoroughfare in their neighborhood and a bar where they were regulars.

The band petered out in the late ’80s, although one of its founders, Bobby Harris and another early member, Skip Martin, kept it alive, performing its hits on package funk oldies tours.

Recently, another founder, lead guitarist/songwriter Michael Calhoun decided to form a full ensemble that would perform not just the funk hits but also the band’s much beloved ballads that he found fans expressed a desire to hear. He’s gathered together nine musicians, including former Dazz Band members, to play their complete repertoire.

Given the surging popularity of classic soul and funk, the time may be right.

They’ll be playing at the Beachland Ballroom with BeDazzle, a special-events ensemble that also does a concert set.

Line dance king Robert Johnson Jr. will also be on hand to make sure the dance floor stays busy.

Tickets are $15 in advance, $20 at the door.
