Swing Out Sister is one of those bands you may know back in the recesses of your mind but struggle to connect with their music.
They were one of a multitude of ’80s pop bands with a slightly offbeat sound that became known for one or a handful of hits. In their case, the sound was sleek, jazzy, electropop; the hit was 1986’s “Breakout.”
And while they continued to have some British chart songs and club hits like “Surrender” and “Twilight World” until the end of the ’80s, that was pretty much it in the American mainstream. This despite the fact that their sound presaged the neo-lounge and trip-hop movements of the ’90s.
“They’re still together!?” you exclaim.
Indeed they are. The band — actually core members vocalist Colleen Drewery and keyboardist Andy Connell augmented by other players — continued to record and tour throughout the ’90s and ’00s, propelled by pockets of popularity in places like Japan.
Somehow, they’ve found their way back to these parts, and they’ll be playing at Nighttown, with two shows on July 4 for those who prefer fizz to fireworks.
Tickets are $40.
