It’s been well over 20 years that Over the Rhine, the husband-and-wife led band from Cincinnati, has been bringing their smart, introspective music up I-71 to northeast Ohio.
The songwriting of Karin Bergquist and Linford Detweiler has fueled the band since it released its debut Till We Have Faces in 1991, with Bergquist’s sleek, dreamy voice providing its signature sound.
At that time, their type of artsy folk-pop was on the ascendant with groups like 10,000 Maniacs, The Innocence Mission and Cleveland’s own Walk-Ins. They snagged a deal with IRS in 1992, which released three of their albums.
But they’ve persevered long past the point where they were the Next Big Thing. Theirs is a type of music that builds relationships with fans, with mature lyrics and a nuanced sound that you don’t outgrow.
Their latest album, The Long Surrender, came out on their own Great Speckled Dog label in 2011.
They’ll be at Musica in Akron. Tickets are $20.
