One of the most distinctive sounds to come out of that most distinctive American music market, New Orleans, is the brass band. The bubbly brass section that dominates its joyful sound seems designed for leading a parade in the street — something such bands do all over New Orleans every day.
While many brass bands comprise musicians moonlighting from their mundane day jobs, a handful of them bring the brass band gospel on the road. One of those is the Rebirth Brass Band, a spit-polished ensemble formed in 1983.
When they’re not touring, Rebirth is known for their red-hot late-night Tuesday shows at the Maple Leaf in New Orleans’ uptown neighborhood. But you don’t have to make the trip down there this week — it’s hot and muggy there at this time of the year anyway. They’re bringing the party to the Beachland Ballroom.
Tickets are $18 in advance, $20 at the door. Progeny opens.
