What is it with the big outbreak of neo-polka in Cleveland? It’s been decades since your grandmother never missed her weekly TV date with Polka Varieties, and 60 years since Frankie Yankovich was Cleveland’s biggest hitmaker.
Maybe the slogan of the Polka Pirates, who host the Polka Bash at Brothers Lounge this afternoon, offers a clue. They boast that their repertoire includes “All kinds of happy music!”
The Cleveland-based group doesn’t just play all styles of polka including Slovenian or Cleveland-style, Polish, and German, but also big-band and Dixieland, Latin, country and even some rock and roll — anything that’s upbeat and danceable. So be sure to wear comfortable shoes.
