For her fans around the world, her strangeness is part of Clevelander Baby Dee’s appeal.
Part musical performer, part performance artist, she’s one of those oddities frequently adopted by indie hipsters like Will Oldham. Her bio describes her as “an enchanting song writer, classically trained harpist, circus sideshow veteran, and transgender street legend.”
Baby Dee’s talents were unknown to most of the world until the release of her first album in 2001, when she was almost 50. She made one more album in 2003, then returned to her quiet life in Cleveland. But she was pulled out of retirement by Oldham and his collaborator Matt Sweeney, who produced her 2008 Safe Inside the Day.
Her latest album, Regifted Light, was produced by different sort of oddity — the satirical party rocker, television personality, and performance artist of sorts himself, Andrew W.K. They recorded the primarily instrumental album that’s sort of a fun-house version of classical music, at her home in Cleveland.
Baby Dee’s been around the world — she spent March in the Netherlands and Belgium and heads back to Europe in May. But she’ll be performing for her hometown (as part of a national tour) tonight at Mahall’s.
She’ll be joined on all those dates, including Cleveland, by New Yorker Little Annie aka Annie Anxiety Bandez, a artist/performer whose talents include acting, singing, painting, writing, and performance art. You’d run out of fingers counting all the experimental and underground scenes she’s been part of. Little Annie and Baby Dee are long-time buddies who are currently collaborating on an album, according to Little Annie’s website.
It’s only $10 in advance and $12 at the door to see a show the likes of which you are unlikely to see again.
