Junk

Appreciation is a word we use often. Alex offers her appreciation of Robert Ebert, ironically in time for our own film feast. Teens can turn their own personal junk into art at MOCA, while Sid the Science Kid hangs out at CMNH.
I run into Valerie Mayen a bit since I’m at Gordon Square all the time. This week, she’s doubling down on her space, and you’re invited to celebrate.
Our urban landscape can look pretty junky or is that just your subconscious getting the better of you? Commentator Richey Piiparinen explores that phenomenon and highlights the good work of Jack Storey and Phil Kidd and other rust belt revivalists.
While you’re at it, inhale the Cleveland Mini Maker Faire hosted by Ingenuity at CPL. Go forth & create, just like your urban ancestors have done. Think or swim. Rock the catwalk. Cupcake wars! Maybe have a stop at the Cleveland Flea on St. Clair. Just don’t call it junk.
Performance art is blowing up around here (it’s about time). Meanwhile, Terry Schwarz & Corine Vermeulen explore art’s role in improving the urban landscape. Whoa, really? We’ve been exploring that for 10 years. Now get your hands off my junk. –Thomas Mulready

A city can be a catch-all for personal junk. Here, the mechanism is a psychological one, and it’s one called “projection,” which is defined as “a defense mechanism where a person subconsciously denies his or her own negative attributes by ascribing them to objects or persons in the outside world instead.”
The comment section on Cleveland.com, and other metropolitan comment sections, is perhaps the ultimate proving ground for excavating interpersonal crap onto the other…

Using an innovative projection system that turns all the walls of the Maltz Museum’s gallery into floor-to-ceiling display screens, their new exhibition Spots of Light features the life stories of numerous women dealing with life and death, food and art, faith and friendship, motherhood and personhood, love and everyday life.
Listen to executive director Lynda Bender as she highlights a few of her favorite exhibits: a brassiere handmade from scavenged materials; a group of 10 women who banded together and survived the concentration camps; the obsession with food and recipes even though most of the prisoners were starving. Cleveland and Cuyahoga County governments are notorious for being tone deaf on certain issues. They’re at it again with their obsession with Skywalks, so Cool Cleveland commentator Joe Baur made this video with Wile E. Coyote and Bill Murray’s Carl Spackler to show how ridiculous they’re being.

When Jimmy Dimora was sentenced to far, far too long in prison for what amounted to little more than a couple of blow jobs, a pizza oven for his backyard and some marble counter tops for his kitchen, the only major media outlet to raise a question was Channel 19….

Despite the Cleveland Indians marketing slogan asserting that ours is a “Tribe Town,” anyone who has been paying attention to the sports-talk discourse over the past few years has little doubt that Cleveland is owned lock, stock and barrel by the Browns.
In fact, it could be argued that — media-wise — the team is more like an occupying army than a football franchise…

The Opportunity Corridor – Can We Do Better? Angie, I respectfully disagree with your analysis. As you indicate, this is a boulevard, a couple of miles long with several traffic lights and a 35 mph speed limit, yet most of your comparison reference freeway/highways….

I do not live in the city, but I see what freeways have done, along with the misguided urban renewal projects of the ’50s and ’60s. I lived in St. Louis and saw Pruitt-Igoe built. They demolished a fine neighborhood to do that and it turned into a crime-ridden mess….
