Two of Cleveland’s most dynamic communities are its artists and its urban growers.
North Collinwood artist Linda Zolten Wood had the brainstorm to bring them together when she won a grant from Community Partnership for Arts and Culture.
Wood’s Collinwood Painted Rain Barrel Project recruited artists to submit designs for unique rain barrels — containers that catch rain water for reuse. Ten artists were selected to create bright, fanciful images to replace the plain white surface of the barrels.
Wood is having a party tonight at Arts Collinwood on Waterloo to auction off the barrels. Chefs from the Collinwood neighborhood will provide food, and the Calloloo Café next door will be open for guests to purchase drinks. The instrumental guitar/bass duo of Doug Wood and Darren Frate — whom some Cleveland music scensters will remember from ’90s folk-jazz ensemble Watts Gnu — will bring the music.
The value of the barrels is estimated at $500. But bidding will start at only $100, offering the possibility of a real bargain, in addition to having an eye-catching art piece for your back yard. Each winning bidder will get full instructions on how to install and use the barrel.
You can see the designs here to decide in advance which one you want to bid on.
Tickets to the party are $25 or $15 for students and artists. They’re available in advance here or at the door.
