In its 27 years, Chicago’s Newberry Consort, affiliated with the Newberry Library Center for Renaissance Studies, has become nationally known for its early-music performances. So it’s a real treat that the ensemble is coming to Cleveland’s Church of the Covenant to celebrate the installation of the church’s Newberry organ.
For the occasion, it will perform a program called Celestial Sirens: Music from Italian & Mexican Convents. It features eight women’s voices, including soprano Ellen Hargis, who is the group’s co-director.
The group’s press release explains, “Celestial Sirens explores the musical traditions of cloistered nuns, who not only played and sang music by prominent male composers, but also composed music themselves. The luminous sound of the all-female choir was as wildly popular in the 17th century as it is today, often causing the nuns to be censured for their fame in the secular world.”
The program will also feature Frances Fitch playing the Newberry organ, and Oberlin student Katherine Shuldiner on viola de gamba.
Tickets are $25; $18 for seniors and $7 for students. For more information and tickets, go here.
