Homegrown

If you know anything about us at all, you know we love our local people, places and events. Seems like no matter what it is, we can grow our own right here.

Local music is what our new music column by Anastasia Pantsios is all about: from Whiskey Daredevils’ new release to all the great NEO bands headed to SXSW. An experiential gardening workshop for kids at Shaker Lakes takes homegrown literally. Same with a fermentation workshop at the Root. Or local photography & local food at the HOMEGROWN event at the new Cle Print Room.

Homegrown dancer & educator Tom Evert is back, teaching kids geometry through dance. A homemade Coppelia is at the Beck. 6 in Studio at 78th Street puts our local artists collaboratively on display. The closer we look, the more we see growing. –Thomas Mulready

6 in Studio

Typically, viewers experience art after it’s created.

But 6 in Studio is different. This exhibition, opening Fri 3/15, allows visitors to witness each artist’s individual creative process. But not only that — it also allows the artists to work in a creative, collaborative atmosphere…

Land — who occupies it, who uses it, who makes decisions about it, and for what purposes — is of supreme importance to people all over the world.

That’s why land (hand-in-hand with religion) is the root cause of virtually all wars from the beginning of civilization. Encroachment is relatively common. So too is decision-making by entities and organizations from outside the boundaries of the communities in question…

The Dow Jones is rallying at over 14,000 and yet the only thing the business media can talk about is two corporate leaders: Marissa Mayer and Sheryl Sandberg.

Mayer made headlines most recently when she ordered a new policy stating that employees now have to work from the office (vs. from home, a coffee shop, the beach, etc.).

Sandberg’s making waves because of her new book encouraging women to pursue professional success and strive to have the best careers possible…

Whiskey Daredevils Deliver New CD As longtime fans know, the Whiskey Daredevils repertoire is larded with sarcastic tunes usually delivered at a frenetic pace with twangy guitar and Greg Miller’s deadpan smartaleck vocals, mixed with teary ’50s tributes that often have a sly kicker in the lyrics. III puts more emphasis on the band’s serious side…

Coppelia @ the Beck
Ballet for Everyone

We had always identified Beck Center for the Arts with theater as opposed to dance but when we heard about their Coppelia, the comic ballet about a dancing doll, we took it as an opportunity to learn more about dance at the Beck…

The first paying gig I got as a writer — close to 20 years ago — was from a quarterly publication based near the campus of Harvard University, which went by the unusual name of Race Traitor.

I still clearly recall how thrilled I was to receive the check for $25 because, to me at least, it meant I was no longer an amateur… I was a “paid” professional…

The Space Between Buildings
Who Has The Rights?

Skywalks have been a major point of contention between city residents, developers and politicians. I’ve made my opinion well known, as have other Clevelanders who view skywalks as a detriment to walkable environments.

Though no matter how many experts we, the anti-skywalk crowd, point to that say skywalks are generally a bad idea, there are still those who stand on ideological grounds…

I played clarinet at a relative’s bat mitzvah in Atlanta. Afterward the DJ announced, “Give it up for Uncle Bert from Cleveland!”

A guest — a non-relative — complimented me. He said he, too, was from Cleveland. He said, “People are always ragging on Cleveland. I defend it. Everybody lives in developments here in Atlanta, and if you’re here two years, you’re considered an old-timer…”

Let’s Put a Cap on Parking Well said! The cap, I would add, should be lower than our current total…
Read the comment from Angie Schmitt here

Caps, taxes and other artificial cost hikes are the main reason people have fled Cleveland and its inner ring suburbs. A better solution would be to privatize transit and eliminate controls on the taxicab industry…

I totally agree. My office sometimes has meetings on the top floor of Terminal Tower and it always makes my heart sink to look down at all the surface lots that dominate the fabric of the city…
Read the comment from Jillian Davis here

In sane societies unused or dormant space is better occupied than vacant. Downtown Cleveland lacks any real scene or vibrancy due to many factors, and a surplus of surface level parking is at the top of the list…

MANSFIELD: Naysayers, Haters and a Lack of Visionaries Thank you, Mansfield for answering my question. Let me say that I am a strong proponent of Urban Farming, but I have been worried that many of the projects are not as innovative as they will need to be to make it profitable for “market gardeners”…
