I immediately bonded with Deanna Bogart when I read in her bio that when she was in middle school and wanted to play saxophone, she was told, “Girls have to play clarinet.” So was I. I hated the clarinet and lasted only one semester in my grade school band.
Unlike me, Bogart did not give up. Not only has she put childhood piano lessons to better use than I have, sax is also part of the instrumental repertoire with which she produces the rockin’ boogie-woogie blues that has made the D.C.-based musician a staple on the festival and tour circuit. She’s been a professional musician for over three decades and has nine albums out under her own name. Her latest release, Pianoland, features a mix of keyboard pounders and wailing late-night blues. She’s at the Winchester. Tickets are $15.
