Americana Singer Rachel Brooke at Now That’s Class

Thu 3/21 @ 9PM

How eclectic is Now That’s Class? The club is interrupting its regularly scheduled program of punk, metal, and noise bands to bring you Rachel Brooke, whose bio describes her music as “sepia-toned,” and who lists among her influences Hank Williams, Howlin’ Wolf, Bessie Smith, Chuck Berry, the Carter Family, Jimmie Rodgers, Lightnin’ Hopkins, Memphis Minnie, the Everly Brothers, Jerry Lee Lewis and the Beach Boys.

Elements of jazz, blues, rock, country and bluegrass crop up in her music, which someone somewhere has undoubtedly dubbed “alt-country.” And although she’s from a little town in northern Michigan with a population of less than 600, she’s got a knowing voice that sounds like she’s seen a lot of big-city midnights — just give a listen to the insinuating “Late Night Lover” from her latest CD A Killer’s Dream.

Openers Hiram Rapids Stumblers from, ahem, Hiram will bring bluegrass/old-time-y sounds to the show. Let ’Em Run and Mike Brown & the Cuyahoga Rebels are also on the bill. Admission is $6.
