Alejandro Escovedo at the Beachland Ballroom

Tue 3/26 @ 8 PM

To describe everything Austin-based musician Alejandro Escovedo has done in his nearly 40-year-career and all the musical and cultural influences he’s soaked up would take all day.

He played with early punk group the Nuns in San Francisco in the ’70s; after moving to Austin in the ’80s, he joined pioneering alt-country/Americana bands Rank and File and True Believers. He released the first of his ten solo albums in 1992, working with a diverse string of top-flight producers including Stephen Bruton (Kris Kristofferson, Carly Simon, Elvis Costello), Chris Stamey (the dBs, Whiskeytown, Alex Chilton), John Cale (Velvet Underground, Stooges, Patti Smith) and Tony Visconti (David Bowie, T. Rex, Paul McCartney). He attracts such collaborators for a reason: everything he does exudes quality, elegance, and depth.

And how could you not appreciate a guy who once declared he would stop performing one of his own songs (“Castanets”) after finding out it was on George Bush’s iPod? (He maintained the ban for two years).

Escovedo and his band the Sensitive Boys will be at the Beachland Ballroom for a primarily seated show, since his fans like to soak up all the nuances in his tunes, which reward careful listening. Tickets are $20.
