Classical music is known for producing pre-teen prodigies. Jazz, which prizes emotional depth as much as technical prowess, not so much. But saxophonist/ singer/composer Grace Kelly, still a few months shy of 21, is already making her mark.
Like many of us, Kelly started piano lessons at age 6, but she quickly soared far beyond where most of us go, spreading her wings from classical music to jazz, and from piano to clarinet to sax. Luckily, her Chinese mother was not a “tiger mom,” dictating that she was going to be a doctor with a sideline as a classical pianist. Instead, her parents encouraged her broad musical interests. She recorded her first album at age 12; she now has eight recordings under her belt. And she’s performed or recording with a vast array of established jazz artists, including Cleveland-based percussionist Jamey Haddad.
Kelly will be performing with her quintet for the second of two nights at Nighttown in Cleveland Heights. Tickets are $20. Students with ID can get in for $10 to be inspired or frustrated, depending on their mood.
