Musician/composer/musicologist Halim El-Dahb has become a Kent legend and local cultural treasure since he landed at Kent State University in 1969. Now a professor emeritus, the Egyptian-born El-Dahb’s resume, accumulated over 92 years (his actual age), is too long to relate. You can find it here.
Each year on his birthday, he invites everyone to a free celebration at Standing Rock Cultural Arts’ North Water Street Gallery in downtown Kent to share his joy in making music. You’re advised to “bring instruments, beverages and good vibrations.” You can also bring a dish to share if you choose. The Kent African Drum Community performs at 8; others will likely perform whenever the spirit moves them.
