It’s Cooler By the Lake
Lakewood is a streetcar suburb that’s anything but suburban in the traditional sense. Lakewood is downright alive and thriving. One visit to this westside city (and the adjacent Edgewater neighborhood) and you’ll see people out and about enjoying life, living up all that the town has to offer. “The ‘Wood” is 5.6 miles of houses (Lakewood is often called “The City of Homes”), mom-and-pop shops, pocket parks, community gardens, bars (lots of bars!), churches (lots of churches!) and people genuinely invested in their community.
The best way to experience Lakewood is on foot (or by bike). In fact, Lakewood was designated “Ohio’s Most Walkable City” by Walkscore.com and the city is working with cyclists to become one of the most bicycle-friendly communities in the country by 2015.
So, grab your bike or put on some walking shoes and explore the town. Grab a massive grilled cheese sandwich at the original Melt, order a libation at Buckeye Beer Engine or a latte at the wonderfully healthy Root Cafe, pick up some artsy decor at Local Girl and take in some live acoustic music at the Winchester. Yeah, this isn’t a suburb suburb. It’s an urban community with a high standard of living.
Just east of W. 117th Street is the Edgewater neighborhood of Cleveland, a handsome area with well-maintained homes crowned by the stunning views of Edgewater Park.
