I don’t care what you think about country music, folk music, honky-tonk, pop music or rock and roll. Either way, Glen Campbell is a massive talent that is responsible for so much music of all types that you probably can’t even keep track of it.
As a young hot-shot session guitarist in the 1960’s, he was a card-carrying member of possibly the most important backing band in all of 20th Century music, the Wrecking Crew, playing on records by everyone from Elvis Presley to Frank Sinatra to the Monkees, Dean Martin & Nat King Cole. He played on hits by The Beach Boys and tour with them. His work with Phil Spector and fellow session musicians Dr. John & Leon Russel resulted in some of the most memorable songs ever recorded, earning him more per year in the early 1960’s than the President.
When he hit his stride as a solo artist, singer, actor and TV host, he released a string of classic tunes that simply will never go out of style, “Gentle On My Mind,” “By The Time I Get To Phoenix,” “True Grit,” “Galveston,” “Rhinestone Cowboy,” “Southern Nights,” and the incomparable “Wichita Lineman.” His later career has seen honors such as induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame, enabling the careers of musicians such as Alan Jackson, Keith Urban, Tanya Tucker, and others. His recent records have included covers of bands like Green Day, U2, Tom Petty and Foo Fighters. “Ghost on the Canvas,” released in 2011, includes songs by Paul Westerberg, Jakob Dylan, Billy Corgan and Rick Nielsen.
Suffering from short-term memory loss, he announced in 2011 that he had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and this year he has mounted his “Farewell Tour,” with three of his children joining in his backing band.
His last show in the area at The Kent Stage in January 2012 sold out quickly and could have sold out three times over. Tickets are now on sale for his encore appearance on Sat 11/10 at The Kent Stage.
