A Grand Place to Stay
The Old Arcade was America’s first indoor shopping mall, complete with a block-long glass skylight for a ceiling, and five floors of shops and offices whose brass rails frame the atrium.
It was built in 1890, and is a block long, spanning the distance between Euclid and Superior Avenues. Because these two streets are not exactly parallel, there is a 23° bend between the South entrance area and the main arcade. While taking in the initial over-all view of this magnificent space is striking, focus on some details.
