Embarrassing First Films
By Alex Sukhoy
Akron is one cool area. Most of us know that it’s home to Devo and Chrissie Hynde of the Pretenders. It’s also the birthplace of Jim Jarmusch, the prophetic director to such indie classics as Stranger Than Paradise, Coffee and Cigarettes and Broken Flowers. Each one of these talented people must have had a first song or a first film.
Akron has, for most part, been one eclectic city, attracting more of the same. And, now, Akron is giving N.E. Ohio artists the opportunity to showcase their firsts at the quirky and local fave Lockview Restaurant, home to gourmet grilled cheese and micro-brews, as it hosts First Films on Thu 6/14.
At First Films, filmmakers are encouraged to open the vaults and share some of their earliest works. According to Rob Lucas, Akron Film+Pixel Communication Director, at the First Films event, “We’re looking for your first attempt at making a movie…Something more than just home videos, but before you made your first polished professional project. I’m looking forward to seeing those sixth grade renditions of Siddhartha from 1992. And don’t worry, we’ll be laughing with you.”
The event begins at 8PM and space for the screening will be on a first come, first serve basis. Also, multiple devices will be provided, including a DVD player, a VHS VCR, a VHS-C adapter and a Mini-DV player.
So bring those first attempts at cinema, where your protagonist bares a close resemblance to its maker and where, at the time, the dialog felt deeper than any pool you had swam. Dive right in and let others surrender to the moment with you.
Who knows? Maybe you’ll meet the next Jim Jarmusch. Maybe, it will be you.
First Films occurs on Thu 6/14 at 8PM @ Lockview Restaurant. For more information please contact Rob Lucas at (330) 618-4405, Steve Felix at (330) 603-1520, email info@akronfilm.com or visit http://AkronFilm.com.
