Feed the Hungry, Feed the Soul
Make Time for Soul Food
By Susan Schaul
Where can you meet friends, see handcrafted art, bid in a fundraising artist auction, listen to live music and taste delicious “heavy” hors d’oeuvres all at one location? Come to the Screw Factory (13000 Athens Avenue, Lakewood) on Sat 3/31 from 6:30 – 11pm for the third annual Soul Food event, a hunger relief program sponsored by Trinity Lakewood Community Outreach (TLCO), the secular branch of the Trinity Lakewood Church.
To highlight the theme of hunger and food, Chef Matt Somich will prepare his creative culinary offerings to complement the wine and delicious desserts. Over 30 pieces of artwork featuring a variety of foods have been donated by Brooke Figer, Tate Davidson, Rachel Short, Lori Bellman and Kris Williams among other artists. Organization spokesperson Jason Weiner said, “Last year we raised over $5,000 from this worthwhile event. We are anticipating close to 400 people this year to come together to support this health initiative.”
With a live auction of original artwork by many Lakewood artists, a Kindle Fire donated by Hyland Software, a weekend getaway to Kelly’s Island, the soulful sounds of the band We the People, and XeLa spinning soul and R&B music, it all promises to be a great time for a worthwhile cause. Caribou Coffee has donated coffee for the evening and an estimated 100 local businesses are expected donate raffle and silent auction items.
The $10 admissions ticket includes all food, drink and entertainment. The event is cash only and all proceeds will support the hunger relief efforts of TLCO. Their mission is to foster a healthier community through collaboration, education and by meeting basic needs. This community organization provides four hot meals a month, a free monthly produce distribution (April – November), a community garden that supports the hot meal program, and health and wellness programming supporting neighbors in need. See you there!
