Mike Hovancsek: New Music, Free Music
Ascend – an album created with the grief of losing his infant son. Per request of Hovancsek, the album is available for free download here. Saturated in the passion of such a huge loss, the music foils that emotion in its simplicity. Primarily instrumental, Ascend is 54 minutes of soothing sounds. The vocals featured are used as an instrument, not as a means to respect a crescendo in the music or fulfill a void; they round out the mission of the sounds. The instruments are put in a different context than what we are used to. Using pieces we associate with different cultures and almost tribal chants, the music does not give off that air. It takes you down several paths, using wind and water for noise, ringing bells, the beauty of nature and the beauty found in devastating losses. If impressed from this display, you will assuredly like to dabble in two of his other albums on the site: Turbulent Calm and Temporal Angels.
The work of Mike Hovancsek is unlike anything you would expect from Kent, Ohio. I would list the instruments he features on his albums, but it would be tedious and most are foreign to the Cleveland ear. He has been a musician for over 25 years; you may recognize him from Pointless Orchestra. As Ascend is a free download, I’d recommend taking a chance on it. If anything, your home will appreciate the ambiance it provides.
