VIDEO: A Bird in the Hand

Ralph Waldo Emerson said: “Adopt the pace of nature: her secret is patience.” Winter’s quiet pace in Cleveland MetroParks Rocky River Reservation is from a human standpoint only. When you patiently stand still in these woods, its secrets really come to life – in the form of hardy little birds. And at certain spots in the park, if you stretch out your arm with sunflower seeds in the palm of your hand and wait patiently, chickadees, tufted titmice and maybe even a cardinal will flit cautiously in to take a treat. The thrill of their subtle touch is delightful.

You too can hand-feed the chickadees any day this winter at Rocky River Reservation. Dress warmly and either bring your own sunflower seeds or stop by the front desk in the nature center for a handful. There are scheduled times when a naturalist can guide you. Check The Emerald Necklace for those dates and times, or call the nature center at 440-734-6660 for the schedule. Cleveland MetroParks’ Rocky River Nature Center is located at 24000 Valley Parkway in North Olmsted.
