CD REVIEW: Something I’ve Never Felt EP by Call It Fiction

Something I’ve Never Felt
Call It Fiction

“It’s more than a dream, IT’S THE REAL THING.” Straight from the mouths of Akron boys, Call It Fiction, this is a real thing. Coming out this Saturday is the second project by the 5-piece: Something I’ve Never Felt. A 6 song EP, this work will be presented on a silver platter at the Grog Shop on Sat 3/5.

Pop punk isn’t a genre that has significant distinction between bands, but it still manages to attract the die-hardiest of fans. This album has remnants of Cartel and Starting Line and Motion City Soundtrack, with some sequences (not sound) reminiscent of Taking Back Sunday. Their music is very similar to many, but their tickets will probably be cheaper. Reason #1 to check them out. Reason #2: pop-punk is fun. There is really no other way to sum this up in one word. I realize that your ears will not explode with the mind-boggling combination of guitar, synth, and vocals, but they will get their dancing shoes on.

The six songs are about sunshine and summer, doing what you want to do, and of course, girls. Ridiculously catchy hooks and poppy beats keep you listening. They mesh well into the popular music scene, as seen just with whom they’ve shared the stage with, including Bayside and Mayday Parade. Their songs have a consistent sound throughout the EP and are in tune with their last 3 song EP. Previous fans will agree to this release and pop-punk lovers may swoon.

The lyrics are clever, “[I’m] always burning a lot of bridges, now I’m breathing in too many ashes” to “Suddenly I’ve had a change of heart, instead of placing it on my shelf I’m taking it out of the chest that it’s in and I’m gonna sing my whole heart out.” The vocals overall are a little lacking on enunciation. There’s not a lot of variation with the drum beat; they’re there to keep the beat and that’s about as far as it goes. They do blend well with gang vocals and well-executed synth, accenting the overall emotion-rattler of the song. Honestly, it’s a fun, upbeat pop-punk album. If you have ever moshed to the beat of punk-rockers or have ever done the fist pump, you’ll probably appreciate this music.

Catch Call It Fiction’s CD Release show at the Grog Shop this Sat 3/5. It’s an early show (5PM), played with Clevelanders Second Time Around, Love & Fear, Fighting Words, and The Whenever Plan. Check out their music at http://MySpace.com/thisiscallitfiction.
