In the spirit of the movie My Dinner with Andre, eavesdrop with Cool Cleveland correspondent Carol Drummond on some stimulating dinner conversation of key players at Emerging Chefs, a new monthly program to showcase Cleveland’s culinary superstars. They dined at the chef’s table at Dante [pictured] in Tremont, right in the middle of a busy Friday night rush. Emerging Chefs is a group of local food enthusiasts planning and promoting regular events themed around unusual venues and culinary trends, while featuring one or more of Cleveland’s emerging chef talent.
Co-Founder and Partner David Allen Moss, the design force behind the venture, shares his vision of how attention to all the details surrounding each event makes for a cohesive and intriguing experience. Cleveland’s Tech Czar and author Michael DeAloia, also Co-Founder and Partner of Emerging Chefs, chimes in with passion for the food scene in NEO and schemes for future events. Emerging Chef Matt Mytro, Chef/Owner of StoveMonkeys.com, whets our appetite with tidbits of what’s on the menu and the inspiration behind his choices. Watch the video and find out more about future Emerging Chefs’ events here.

Long before Bone Thugs-N-Harmony put Northeast Ohio on the hip-hop map, there was an up-and-coming Cleveland outfit that epitomized the ’60s soul sound. Known for its harmonies, The Hesitations made a splash early on with its 1968 version of the theme song for feature film Born Free. Over the next few years, the outfit recorded four albums Soul Superman, Born Free, That’s Where Its At and Solid Gold and scored other notable tracks such as “The Impossible Dream” and “Who Will Answer.”
The success of the group led to performing at the famed Apollo Theater and sharing the stage with the likes of Gladys Knight and the Pips, Stevie Wonder, The O’Jays, Sly and the Family Stone and more.
While the act disbanded in the early ’70s, in 2006 its singer Art Blakely reformed The Hesitations for a special Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum concert celebrating the doo-wop era with The Skyliners, US Bonds, The Reflections and The Edsels. Considering he couldn’t get any original Hesitations members interested in the reunion, Blakely turned to members of his old singing act The Sahibs to relive the music. So far, the vocal group has found renewed interest overseas, including a U.K. tour last year. CoolCleveland talked to lifelong Cleveland resident Blakely, 69, about The Hesitations’ Sat 1/22 show at the Beachland Ballroom… Read more from John Benson here

Have you noticed something about the Beachland? For 11 years, they’ve showcased almost every type of popular music – every kind of rock, and folk, blues, bluegrass, rockabilly and more.
But the venue has also started hosting many fund-raisers for small arts and other non-profit organizations, political rallies, and even memorial events for people who were members of the region’s musical and arts communities. Why are they holding those kinds of events? Can’t they make more money booking rock bands? Maybe it’s not all about money.
Cool Cleveland correspondent David Budin went to the Beachland to ask co-owner Cindy Barber about that. Hear what she had to say here.

We all have our passions, and it is clear within the first .005 seconds of Cleveland’s Galactic Moustache’s debut album, Star Seed, what theirs is: SPACE. A collaboration (or “cosmic partnership,” as they call it) of Photon Man and Buckner Oblivion, Galactic Moustache boasts more than just cosmic tunes, but incorporates rock, rap and electronica into the seven songs featured on Star Seed. In your interest, theyll be playing an Earth show on Sun 1/23 at the Grog Shop.
Stylistically, the album sounds like Rage Against the Machine and Linkin Park in a jam session at the Mos Eisley Cantina. It’s typical rock with estranged lyrics written in attempt to make the vocalists seem as badass and rule-disregarding as possible. They sing of the ignorance of society, “Generation MTV,” ethics and similar subject matter that numerous bands have harped on about… Read more from Laurie Wanninger here

We saw and heard Peru Negro at Cleveland Museum of art in 2004 and we’ve been fans ever since. Hoping to learn more about the group, we spoke on the phone with Juan Morillo, President at Peru Negro Inc., on Wed 1/12/2011.
CoolCleveland: We were afraid we wouldn’t be able to talk with you before our deadline. On your website your North American tour doesn’t seem to start until 1/15/2011 in Montreal.
Juan Morillo: I came early. The group arrives Friday.
We found your article [on this] website very informative. Please give our readers some of the history of the African community in Peru and the background of Peru Negro.
Most people are surprised to learn that there are black people in Peru. What’s known about Peru is usually related to the legacy of the Incas, but, you know, Peru was a colony and like all the other colonies they had slavery. Peru was the center of the colonies in South America. Peru was where the gold and silver were to be found… Read more from Elsa Johnson & Victor Lucas here

There are African-Americans of a certain generation who are quick to tell you they actually preferred life in the South, and their logic — which does make a kind of sick, counterintuitive sense — is, “Down there at least you know what white folks are thinking about you.” Well, our new governor is about to make blacks with that mindset feel right at home here in Ohio.
John Kasich, God bless him, just might single-handedly reignite and eventually unite the largely moribund black rights organizations around Ohio with his kick-ass, screw-you, in-your-face brand of politics.
The shock, awe and indignity being expressed by leaders of minority communities of color from around the state (as well as by fair-minded citizens of all races and color in Ohio) in regards to the all-white cabinet the newly-elected Kasich rolled out last week is truly puzzling. Just what the heck did we expect from him… racial inclusion?
