Robin Cottingham, Senior VP of KeyBank and the chair of United Way’s Community Investment committee, was as blown away as we were. Each year, the United Way of Greater Cleveland teams up with the Cleveland Browns on their Hometown Huddle to help inspire kids with their national Play 60 project to get kids playing outside for 60 minutes a day. But we had seen nothing like this.
As you can see, this year, hundreds of volunteers spent the day tearing down and totally rebuilding Karamu House’s play space into a 44,000 sf wonderland of swings, slides, see-saws, a climbing wall and vertical wave steps that were actually designed by the kids at a Design Day in August. National partners KaBOOM have helped build 1800 of these play spaces, and on 10/19, over 250 volunteers just like Robin were on hand, along with more than a few strong Browns players to do the labor. Due to the extraordinary alignment of our Gregorian calendar, Election Day falls just hours after Halloween this year, a poetically and politically ironic juxtaposition, as this year it has become increasingly difficult to differentiate between the platforms and people running for office.
The reason for this confusion is simple.
Apparently, the hot new costume this year is “Tea Party Candidate,” an affiliation designed to keep politicians out of hot water, and which now comes in Small, Medium, Large, Extra-Large, and Momma Grizzly.
Just like football’s “Wildcat Offense” and Wall Street’s “Mortgaged Backed Securities” before it, being connected with the Tea Party is now considered as hip as Tweeting that you’ve un-friended you ex-boss on your Facebook page, and have now been crowned Foursquare Mayor of Strongsville’s Panera Bread restaurant.
Not since the signing of the Declaration of InTEApendence and the ConsTEAtution has there been such a groundswell of support for a water-based beverage…. Read more from Douglas O’Bryon here
Who Will Be the Real Winner in the County Election?
Trying to analyze the race for Cuyahoga County executive with an eye toward predicting what will happen is something of a fool’s errand.
Considering the uncertainty of what exactly will be involved in this newly created position and – with one notable exception – the lack of familiar names among the candidates, this election is more like totally uncharted territory than perhaps any in the county’s history.
But here goes…

The educational events and public programs that the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum presents are what take the museum, which is already a great place, into a higher plane and cement its standing as a real national treasure.
The education department’s – and the Rock Hall’s – biggest event of every year, the American Music Masters Series, is just around the corner. This year, the series – which the Rock Hall produces in conjunction with Case Western Reserve University’s Baker-Nord Center for the Humanities – pays tribute to early rock pioneer Fats Domino and his main collaborator Dave Bartholomew. The event begins Mon 11/8, with a week of films, lectures and discussions, and culminates Sat 11/13, with a day-long conference at Case Western Reserve University and a giant all-star concert that night at PlayhouseSquare’s Palace theatre.
Listen to Rock Hall VP of Education Dr. Lauren Onkey talk about these activities and how fortunate Northeast Ohio is to experience this series annually. Watch the video by David Budin here.
Karamu House will inspire and empower with its Fri 10/29 premier of the play From Breast Cancer to Broadway, written by eleven local cancer survivors.
The play will deal with the impact of breast cancer on the lives of women who each have their own story to tell, and whose stories are woven together in a rich tapestry that will entertain, emotionally move, inspire, and educate the audience…. Read more from Claudia Taller here
If we drill down into the ongoing controversy regarding Internet sweepstakes cafes we could perhaps come up with a unique way to raise some much needed funds for educational purposes.
The legality of the so-called “cyber cafes” is about to be decided in Cleveland’s Muny Court, but no matter how the case is adjudicated the issue won’t be solved at the local level. In Toledo a judge ruled one way, and in Akron another judge ruled just the opposite…
