Lynn Rodemann’s Urban Garden

When Lynn Rodemann’s not picking weeds from her immense herb garden, she’s corralling chickens. Or digging in the dirt with her two sons. Or selling tarragon to local restaurants. The point is, she’s busy. Meet Lynn Rodemann — renegade urban farmer and homeschooling mama who runs two Cleveland gardens: one in Detroit-Shoreway and one in Jefferson Park called Devil’s Backbone Market and Educational Herb Farm. In March 2010 Lynn had a 5,000 square foot plot of land near Lorain Rd.

Today she has Devil’s Backbone, a sprawling (and impeccably weed-free) herb garden that serves two main purposes: To provide locally-grown food (some of which goes to area restaurants and CSA shares) and to educate kids. Her 3- and 6-year old sons and their homeschooling group are involved in all aspects of gardening.

Check out her cool urban garden as Cool Cleveland editor Sarah Valek catches up w/ Lynn at Devil’s Backbone herb farm to chat about how she made the leap from backyard gardener to big-time urban farmer. Hear more from Lynn when she speaks at FRESH: Going Local in an Urban Environment on Sat 9/11 @ Visible Voice Books. VisibleVoiceBooks.com. Watch the video here
