The Chocolate Bar
Temptation Made Easy

On the edge of East 4th Street, Cleveland’s gastronomic Mecca, where Vivo once stood, the Chocolate Bar recently opened its doors.

A franchise restaurant with another location in Buffalo, the name alone generated a certain buzz across town and peaked the interest of some friends who know a thing or two about the food industry.

Thus, on a chilly mid-January evening, after a delicious dinner at Greenhouse, the four of us headed to Chocolate Bar for decadence and discussion.

To be clear, Chocolate Bar features a full menu, including appetizers, soups, salads, sandwiches and main dishes. But, with its immediate name association, the four of us ordered the following five desserts: The Belgian Chocolate Pyramid ($6.95), “Belgian chocolate mousse with a hint of hazelnut praline covered in a shell of chocolate,” Frozen Hot Chocolate ($9.95) “Made famous in NYC,” Kahlua Heath Bar Torte ($6.59) [pictured] “a smooth rich chocolate mousse with a hint of Kahlua, Heath bar and crushed cookie bottom,” Hot Fudge ($7.95) “Vanilla ice cream, homemade hot fudge, real whipped cream,” and an Alp’ Accino ($12.95) [pictured, top], a trademarked “Chocolate Bar original liquor milkshake…”

Women Making Inroads

March is National Women’s History Month. We thought we made it when women were able to own property and when we were given the right to vote. For many years, pregnant women had to quit their jobs as soon as their pregnancy was “showing” and only in recent years did women get paid maternity leave. Even though women are as educated as men, only a small percentage of us are making it to the board room.

In 1978, the Education Task Force of the Sonoma County (California) Commission on the Status of Women initiated a “Women’s History Week” because the history of women was not included in history books. President Carter issued a Presidential Proclamation in 1980 declaring a week in March as National Women’s History Week. The National Women’s History Project (http://www.nwhp.org) was instrumental in lobbying for recognition of women in history and spearheaded a national effort.

By 1986, 14 states had declared March as Women’s History Month which caused Congress, in 1987, to declare March as National Women’s History Month to honor the achievements of American women…

Shame On Us
Plus, Loopy Logic

What kind of a society do we live in?

No, really, I want to know.

We allow politicians to cut budgets at the very agencies that do the difficult work of providing a safety net for the most vulnerable among us — children — and then, when the all too predictable happens and the now-porous net frays, we want to point media fingers of blame at the dedicated professionals we’ve charged with the impossible task of being perfect … of being 100 percent right, 100 percent of the time in their decision-making processes regarding children of the fragile families who are in their system.

It’s not only grossly wrong for us to demand such accurate (and humanly impossible) foresight… it actually borders on the incredulous, and here’s why…

America’s First Artists
Art of the American Indians, The Thaw Collection

Tour North America through the artistic eyes, creative hands and reverent hearts of people who lived on the North American continent from antiquity to modern times, with a concentration of impressive artifacts from the 1800s.

Stout totems, which were created to be used as interior posts in an Indian house, are positioned on both sides of the entrance to the exhibit providing a solemn approach to the display. With ceremonial drumbeats in your ears, you are welcomed by a tall, carved wooden man called a Potlatch Figure, which is named after the traditional festival of the indigenous cultures of the Pacific Northwest Coast.

He beckons you forward with a come-hither finger. His stern expression is indicative of the significance of the cultural event for which he was made. Each room in the exhibit showcases the artifacts of one area of the continent…

DeMarino Slams Old Bosses For I-Team Deceptions

You might wonder why Mark DeMarino gives a damn about Fox News’s WJW-TV, Channel 8, his former employer. But he does. He can’t shake the idea that journalism is supposed to be about something meaningful.

In this day of cost cutbacks – some possibly necessary, many seemingly simply to cut costs – newspaper and broadcast outlets would be the target of a typical I-Team investigation. About not delivering what is promised. Bait and switch.

That’s what prompted DeMarino to fire off a blistering e-mail to news director Sonya Thompson and other station managers.

It’s a message that shouts, “I’m through with journalism because that’s not what it is anymore…”
