Phase 3: Sixth City Park

I’m not going to lie. This phase is based on a lot of “ifs” and “buts.” Unlike the past, I actually feel optimistic about this. Because of the Flats East Bank, I think Phase #3 has a great shot of getting done. If Pekar Ports are constructed and major shipping ceases on the Cuyahoga.

But only if the people of Cleveland really step-up and help make this decision too.

Everything inside River Road and Mulberry stretching to the riverbank gets demolished. Only residencies, the Nautica Pavilion, and the Powerhouse should be allowed to stay. This new area will be the identifying symbol to Clevelanders and the world there is a new Cleveland. This area will be a park. But not just any park. It will be “Sixth City Park…”

B-W prof Timothy Mussard wins prestigious international award
Melchior Prize is the big deal

Timothy Mussard has a big voice. So big that he has been awarded the 2009 Prix Lauritz Melchior in Paris this past April for his role as Siegfried in the Richard Wagner opera Gotterdammerung, as recorded with the State Opera of South Australia conducted by Asher Fisch, calling his voice, “a force of nature.” He’s known as a helden tenor, or “heroic” tenor voices, able to dominate a stage full of 137 musicians and singers, not counting the two off-stage bands. All without a mic.

Originally from Ohio, Mussard was professor and chair of the voice department at UCLA while performing full-time and traveling the world. He now dedicates himself to his students at Baldwin-Wallace while enjoying a pleasant walk to work instead of a three-hour 28-mile commute. United Way says, “Now More Than Ever”
Co-chairs host pancake flip

Pat Mullin & David Hooker, Managing Partners of Deloitte and Thomspon Hine respectively, have set an ambitious, but reachable $40M goal for the 2009 United Way campaign, announced at their annual Pancake Flip on Public Square, where Cool Cleveland’s Thomas Mulready caught up with them to talk about the essential assistance that United Way provides to the community.

While volunteers flipped over 9300 pancakes, Pat & David talked about the 20% increase in 211 calls, the new emergency help line provided by United Way, and the 202 United Way agencies who receive support and provide assistance to over 400,000 people each year. Ground Works Dance heats up the Ice House

Since 1999, Ground Works Dance Theater performances in the Akron Icehouse have been memorable as much for setting as for choreographic content.

A true landmark building, the 129-year-old Northside Ice/Coal Complex [pictured, with Ground Works artistic director David Shimotakahara] features great sight lines, 50 feet of fly space and minimal barriers against the urban environment.

Rain, heat and cold have a way of penetrating inside the Icehouse and freight trains rumble and clang past outside…

Should We Have Cancelled Labor Day?

When Academy Award winner Sally Field, playing the title character in the 1979 film Norma Rae, finally becomes totally frustrated at the cowardly response of her coworkers as she and a New York labor organizer attempt to form a union in a small Alabama cotton mill town, she scrawls the word UNION on a piece of cardboard and defiantly climbs on top of a worktable and holds it up over her head for everyone to see.

The union movement marked the first large-scale fair treatment of blacks in America, and upon learning this I became a true believer in the power of trade unionism to transform the workplace – and indeed the world – into a fairer, more egalitarian place.

Unfortunately, the cherished beliefs of my youth have diminished over the years, and were finally extinguished once and for all last week right here in Cleveland…

Almeda Trio
Haydn, Shostakovich, Brahms

The Almeda Trio is not quite a year old, but it certainly exhibits an impressive maturity, not to mention a terrific degree of togetherness in this, its first CD.

As trio-in-residence at The Cleveland Music School Settlement, the group is dedicated to performance, education and community outreach. Trio members are Robert Cassidy, piano; Cara Tweed, violin; and Ida Mercer, cello, and all are on the faculty at the Music Settlement.

It’s a wonderful sampler of piano trio literature and an exemplary showpiece for this new trio. No demands are made on the musicians that are not promptly met with grace and musicality…

Loving VisionQuest I’m so enjoying Jeff Biasella’s features on Cleveland’s “developing” waterfront. I’m a native of Toronto who lived in Cleveland for a few years back in the mid to late 1990’s. I worked for the Building Industry Association (now the HBA) and later the Greater Cleveland Growth Association. A few years ago we made a decision to invest in Cleveland by supporting our daughter’s decision to come back and go to one of the best art schools in the nation – the Cleveland Institute of Art. She loves it there!

Amazing Maize Valley Located on 619 just West of Rt. 44 in Marlboro (East of Hartville) is a farm run by the same family for over 100 yrs.
