Women’s rights are under siege in the U.S., as anyone who follows Ohio politics knows. Our legislature recently passed, and Governor DeWine signed, an almost total abortion ban. It’s currently being appealed and clinics are still open. But when the president goes on stage and claims falsely that women and doctors are cuddling healthy newborns while they discuss whether to “execute” them, such irresponsibly incendiary language could easily lead to another wave of clinic bombings and shootings.
It’s this climate that makes events such as the University of Akron Theatre program’s Out of Silence: Abortion Stories from the 1 in 3 Campaign so essential and worthy of support. Presented in partnership with Akron’s New World Performance Lab, it brings together UA performing artists and community members to share stories, discussion and dialogue around the issue of abortion, confronting the misogynist rhetoric around reproductive politics with a dose of real, lived and complicated experience.
Performances take place at Sanedut Theatre in Guzzetta Hall on the UA campus, May 2-5 and at Balch Street Theater in Akron May 10 and 11. General admission tickets are $10, $5 for students.
