Learn How to Join the Fight Against Invasive Plants

Garlic mustard! Get rid of it!

Tue 1/19 @ 7PM

One of the constant issues confronting those who oversee northeast Ohio’s forests, fields and marshes is the incursion of invasive plants — plants the arrives from other countries, some as stowaways, others brought in by garden centers and landscape artists because of their ornamental qualities. But many of these aggressive plants displaced native plants and along with them entire ecosystems of birds, insects and animals that depended on them.

What are these plants and do you have any of them on your property? Join John Barber and Friends of Euclid Creek for a Zoom program titled “Removing Invasive Plants — a Primer for Yards, Parklands, and Watersheds in Northeast Ohio.”

Barber has served on the board of the Nature Center at Shaker Lakes and is currently on the board of the Native Plant Trust. He’s also co-leading the volunteer program Friends of Lower Lake, which is working to restore habitats around Lower Lake Park in the Shaker Parklands.

His illustrated talk will identify some of the most common culprits, their growth habits and the most effective way to remove them. He’ll also share what trees, shrubs and flowering plants can be planted to replace them to improve the health and diversity of the local ecosphere.
