Akron Soul Train Opens New Shows By Two Area Artists

Fri 4/5 @ 5-7:30PM

Akron Soul Train, the nonprofit organization that awards artists of all disciplines short-term “residency” grants to work on specific projects, opens two more shows by recent grantees this week.

Istanbul-born, Akron-based printmaker Melih Meric’s Stitched Editions: Exploring the New draws on traditional Middle Eastern/Islamic abstract patterns to explore their personal spiritual journey through works that blend printmaking processes with stitching and embossing on paper. “My work deals with making peace with a part of my culture that drove me to leave it, finding beauty in design and simplicity, then creating systems to complicate those principles,” they explain.

In the CapSOUL Gallery, Cleveland-based artist and 2022 Cleveland Institute of Art graduate Alyssa Lizzini’s The Universe Between Here and There, features large-scale, multi-layer drawings made from acrylic, ink and collaged paper, that make connections between space, time and memory. They feature lines, grids, maps and other data that, she says, “become the stars, black holes, and supernovae of an ever-expanding universe of memory.”

“The scale of the drawings allows the viewer to feel immersed in each piece, surrounded by swirling and morphing cityscapes, memory objects, and natural elements,” she says.

The shows go on view Wednesday April 3 with a free public reception on Friday April 5. They will remain on view through Saturday May 11.
