Helen Welch, the British-born actress/vocalist who settled in Cleveland almost two decades ago, has become known for her holiday shows, which is why she’s got promotional photos like the one above available. Her catalog includes the album Home for Christmas.
She has another album called Superstar: The Carpenters Reimagined, dedicated to the music of the 70s soft pop group that inexplicably became very hip with underground/punk bands. That’s not Welch’s scene, of course: but her jazzy pop pipes are well-suited to applying her own take to songs like “Rainy Days and Mondays” and “Close to You.”
So her latest Christmas, taking place at Akron’s E.J. Thomas Hall, mashes those two musical proclivities together to come up with “Carpenters Christmas.” The show will feature holiday tunes and other non-holiday hits recorded by the brother/sister duo of Richard and Karen Carpenter, songs like “Merry Christmas Darling,” “The Christmas Song,” “We’ve Only Just Begun,” and “Top of the World.”
