At last year’s Cleveland Photo Fest, Cleveland Heights photographer Joan Lederer showed a body of work called Africa to Cleveland Seeking Safety in our Community. It was the result of spending 10 months with a Congolese family newly arrived in Cleveland, seeking asylum in the U.S. She followed them as they went about their daily lives, trying to assimilate and make sense of a new world and new culture.
Lederer’s work was based on her passion for understanding the experiences of asylum-seekers and spoke to her own family history as the daughter of two Holocaust survivors. And she continues to look for ways to share the story in the community. She’s developed a multi-media presentation she’ll share at Mac’s Backs in Cleveland Heights along with immigration lawyer Brian Hoffman, who will talk about the issues asylum seekers face.
It’s free and open to all.
