Tue 11/7 @ 7:30PM
The Akropolis Reed Quintet, based in Detroit, was founded in 2009 with a mission to perform new music and spotlight contemporary composers.
The youthful ensemble works incredibly hard to spread their particular musical gospel, doing more than 120 concerts and other events each year. And in the 15 years they’ve been together they’ve commissioned more than 130 works by living composers. They’re passion about mentoring the next generation, holding residencies at high schools and recording works by youth composers.
In addition, they’re big on collaboration with other artists, both in and outside music, including poets, dancers, a metal fabricator, string quartets and pop vocalists and crossing genres into jazz as well as pop.
They’ll be performing at E.J Thomas Hall in Akron, under the auspices of the Tuesday Musical Association where they’ll perform a variety of works including a piece from “Splinter” by Chicago-based composer Marc Mellits, and “An American in Paris” by George Gershwin, arranged for reed quintet by Dutch sax player Raaf Hekkema.
