No Exit New Music Presents World Premieres & Early Avant-Garde Music

Thu 12/1 @ 7:30PM

Sat 12/3 @ 8PM

Fri 12/9 @ 7:30PM

Cleveland’s No Exit New Music is devoted to performing world premiere pieces, often in juxtaposition with older avant-garde pieces that inspired them, and its upcoming series of shows is no different.

The program will include premieres of works by David Glaser, Max Friedman and Northeast Ohio composer Frank Wiley, along with a couple of works by early American avant-garde composer Henry Cowell. But it will also reprise what it describes as one of their flagship pieces, Ladislav Kubik’s 2017 Nocturnes.

The pieces that will be heard for the first time — all written in this past year — are Glaser’s Aurora II, Friedman’s Butter-lider and Wiley’s The Dream of Sisyphus. The Cowell work’s are The Banshee from 1925, and Tiger (1928). The latter will feature pianist Shuai Wang.

“This is an exciting concert that features works both old and new,” says No Exit artistic director Timothy Beyer. “In addition to three world premiere pieces that we will be doing, we’ll perform one of our favorite works that were written for No Exit, Nocturnes by Ladislav Kubik. We have a passion for music from the early American avant-garde, so we’ve programmed two really wild pieces by Henry Cowell too.”

They’ll be performing the program at the Praxis Fiber Workshop Galley on  Thursday December 1; at SPACES on Saturday December 3; and at Kent State University Friday December 9.  As always, No Exit’s concerts are free and open to all.
