City Club Forum Looks at Expanded Role of Libraries

Thu 2/17 @ noon

Once upon a time, libraries were known for their long aisles of dark stacks reaching to the ceiling and librarians who gave you the side eye if you coughed or dropped a paper.

Things have changed a lot since then. Libraries check out all kinds of things — even toys and seeds for your garden. They have after-school homework stations and computers for those without them at home; offer advice on applying for jobs; host story hours (even those right-wing reviled drag queen story hours!) and community meetings; and distribute COVID tests.

The Cleveland Public Library’s executive director Felton Thomas Jr. and Cleveland City Council president Blaine A. Griffin will hold a conversation at the City Club about how libraries have changed, where they are going and how they serve the community. It’s moderated by City Club CEO Dan Moultrop. The in-person forum is sold out (you can join the waiting list by contacting Amber Smith at asmith@cityclub.org or 216-350-5572) but the forum is streamed starting at 12:30pm, and if you want to ask a question, you can tweet @TheCityClub or text 330-541-5794.
