On March 15, the Cleveland Museum of Art will be opening Into the Seven Jeweled Mountain: An Immersive Experience, a digital projection of a landscape from a 19th-century Korean folding screen.  The following month, on April 28, it will open the special exhibition Korean Couture: Generations of Revolution. Two gallery rotations will also be featuring Korean art from the CMA collection.

To set the mood for these shows, the museum is hosting the Cleveland debut performance of the Korean music duo CelloGayageum. Formed in 2016, it features musicians playing the instruments that gave the group its name: Sol Daniel Kim on cello and Dayoung Yoo on gayageum, a traditional plucked Korean instrument similar to a zither. Together they blend classical music traditions with those of South Korea, “creating harmony of east and west,” as they put it, reflected in their own compositions which make up their repertoire. Late last year, they released their sophomore album 2.0, the follow-up to 2018’s South Wave, North Wind, offering wider dissemination of their music.

They’ll be performing in CMA’s Gartner Auditorium. At 6pm, prior to the performance, the two musicians will engage in a conversation with CMA’s Curator of Korean Art Dr. Sooa McCormick about how Korean music has influenced their composing. Get tickets here.
