Make Music Day is back, as Cleveland joins in an international celebration that invites people of all types, from professional musicians and ensembles to neighbors with no musical background to make music on porches, sidewalks, businesses, community gardens, parks, driveways and other public places.
There will be plenty of “real” musicians sharing their gifts in odd spots: opera singer, jazz groups, rappers, marching bands, singer/songwriters and more. There isn’t any formal schedule, although the Make Music Cleveland website will share the times and places of anyone who wants to schedule a performance. But you can also just decide that your family is going to gather on your porch and sing some of your favorite tunes.
There’ll also be some organized events including Samba Joia doing a performance and workshop on Public Square at noon, a performance by the Cleveland Bluegrass Orchestra at the Rock Hall and an instrument discovery workshop at Severance Hall, which is also hosting a schedule of free performances. It all winds up at the Beachland Ballroom for an evening of world music, starting at 7pm with Frisson, a multi-generic ensemble formed at Oberlin in 2015; electronic world music quartet Moshuro, Brazilian guitarist Moises Borges; and Oonda and friends. Like all Make Music Cleveland events, it’s free.
