Young Chicago-Bred Jazz Trumpeter Marquis Hill Brings His Blacktet to the BOP STOP

Thu 6/13 @ 8PM

Up-and-coming jazz trumpeter Marquis Hill didn’t have to move to the vibrant jazz community of Chicago to take advantage of the opportunities there; he was already there. The 31-year-old musician began playing before even starting kindergarten, and by the time he reached high school — at Chicago’s respected Kenwood Academy in the south side Hyde Park-Kenwood neighborhood — he was already a standout in its jazz performance program.

He went on to earn music degrees from Northern Illinois and DePaul universities, and performed in clubs and jam sessions around the city, stretching his music muscles, learning from elders and building his own network that encompassed diverse musical genres including R&B, house, hip-hop, soul and all types of jazz. He performed with the Chicago Jazz Orchestra and self-released five albums before moving to New York in 2014 and broadening his turf to include national and international gigs.

He tours nationally with his current ensemble the Marquis Hill Blacktet, which also includes alto sax player Greg Ward, vibraphone and piano player Joel Ross, bassist Jeremiah Hunt and drummer Joe Dyson. They’ll be at the BOP STOP this week. Tickets are $20.
