Check out the Burning River Fest, featuring music [St. Ed’s Trash Talkers are pictured], Christmas Ale, and eco groups manning the booths. Read how Cleveland saved the world in the 1960’s, and is doing it again. Check our hot picks for cool things to do and people to pay attention to, like young Desiree Boardwine. How Cleveland Helped To Save the World in the ’60s
(And What I’m Doing about It Now)

The folk music revival of the early 1960s and the singer-songwriter movement that grew out of it, in the middle and late ’60s, helped, in no small part, to save the world.

It’s a long story, which I’m not going to go into right now. But I can prove it. And I plan to do that in a book I’m writing about it. But, as I said, I’ll skip all of the details for now.

So just take my word for it. Or at least go along with the premise… Read more from David Budin here

MOCA Cleveland moves Uptown into a stunning $26.5M, 34K sf four-story faceted museum designed by Foreign Office Architects of London, at the “Triangle” of Mayfield and Euclid, the keystone to the $150M mixed-use Uptown project developed by MRN, Ltd and Zaremba. Cool Cleveland spoke with Ex. Dir. Jill Snyder: “We’re elated about our progress toward groundbreaking for our new building in Uptown. The incredibly favorable response to our design makes it feel inevitable, but we still have a lot of work to do. Over the coming months, we will reach out to members, other individuals, corporations and foundations to raise a minimum of $4.5 million in additional funds by late fall.”

Playing the RENT
Cleveland teens tackle groundbreaking musical

Talk to Near West Theatre Artistic and Musical Director Bob Navis about how his work with teens in Ohio City putting together huge musicals has been changing lives, and you might mistake his life’s mission for that of every other theatre director: excruciating auditions, exhausting rehearsals. But then you look around and hear the real-life issues these teens tackle in the process of building a musical: homelessness, AIDS, drug abuse, building community.

Watch the video and hear from Navis and teen actor Joe Barbicas as they talk about the challenges of putting on one of Broadway’s grittiest, most real-life productions with a cast of 34 teens, and the AIDS quilt the cast is sewing, honoring their loved ones, to be used in the production. This is truly extraordinary theatre. RENT: School Edition runs Fri 7/23 thru Sun 8/8. http://www.NearWestTheatre.org

Last week, I had the pleasure of attending the retirement party for a Cleveland police commander, my good friend Captain Joe Sadie, one of the finest men to ever don a blue uniform… and a rancorous good time was had by all, or at least all who attended.

But more on that a bit later…

Desiree Boardwine
2010 Gateway City Records

Over the last several years singer/songwriter Desiree Boardwine has been a pretty busy young lady.

Besides graduating high school in the spring of 2009, and attending college full time this past year, she has taken bands to the Tri-C Rock Off Finals twice at the House of Blues; lead her family onto national television by making the finals of the CBS Morning Show Best Family Band in America contest; and just recently won the Grand Prize in the Time Warner Cable Random Acts of Music Songwriting Contest… Read the review from Greg Cielec here

Break It To Me Gently, LeBron The last paragraph is the best, Mr. Frazier. The hero worship of our collective culture for sports stars and movie stars and rock stars is ridiculous. The people who matter most get the least. The people who do the most are least appreciated. It is a sad commentary on the American culture but it is not a erroneous one.
