As we turn the corner into a new decade, CoolCleveland points you to the raw and refined new disc by Cle Orch principal flutist Joshua Smith, the primal satisfactions of Michael Symon’s new B-Spot, the sublime satisfactions of our public libraries, and an admonition from Roldo to keep our community’s resources focused on our primary necessities. Sometimes we need reminding. –Thomas Mulready

B Spot Transports

If you live in the Cleveland area and haven’t heard of chef extraordinaire Michael Symon, then you either don’t watch tv, don’t eat or don’t have friends who do either. Saving the East Cleveland Library

The first paycheck I ever received was from the Cleveland Public Library.

Although I’d had hustles that produced income for a number of years prior, the first official job I had after obtaining a work permit (do young people still have to get one of those to be able to work?) was as a page at the Sterling Branch of the CPL, which is still located on 30th Street near the corner of Central Ave.

I guess you could say that I’ve been a library rat ever since…

Flute Sonatas
Joshua Smith with Jory Vinikour
[DELOS DE 3402]

Many times, when listening to the luscious notes produced by flutist Joshua Smith, I’ve likened him to the Pied Piper of legend. And why not? Those sensuous, silken, seductive sounds would entice anyone to follow along. Not just children, but of course, they’d most likely be just as entranced as adults would be. This CD is just more proof of that statement – as if any was needed…

Doing Damage By Doing What Isn’t Needed
Plus, City Tax Should Be Progressive, But It Isn’t…

After a conversation about Cleveland’s past and present problems a friend asked me the other night – what about solutions. Do you have any solutions? It is a question I’ve been asked before.

No, I don’t have any solutions. I’m not looking for solutions. I don’t believe it’s my job to come up with such answers. I have one answer: We have to stop doing what we’re doing. Then we can concentrate on our problems. Then there would be time, resources and energy to deal with our real problems.

Our leaders want to build too much of what we don’t need, that conflicts with what we already have and damages community that is already viable…
