Clean Water Fest Is Back at Sewer District Southerly Plant

Sat 9/21 @ 9AM-4PM

The Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District treats more than 250 million gallons of wastewater each and every day, half through the Southerly Wastewater Treatment Center in Cuyahoga Heights.

For those interested in clean water — perhaps even some of those who spent the morning doing the Adopt-a-Beach cleanup — the annual Clean Water Fest and Open House at the Southerly facility, which they facetiously call “the #1 event in the #2 business,” is a chance to learn more about what’s being done to protect our water supply.

Visitors can tour the plant and the lab where research is done, touch the trucks used in its work, and visit the Sewer Simulator. This year there will be more than 70 educational exhibits from both NEORSD and partnering organizations such as Cleveland Metroparks, Great Lakes Science Center, Great Lakes Aquarium, Bike Cleveland, Cuyahoga Valley National Park and many more.

There’ll be plenty to amuse kids too: doing experiments with mad scientist “Atom Beaker,” decorating a hard hat and other arts and crafts activities, balloon animals and of course — you know it, your kids love it — face painting!

There’ll also be free ice cream and popcorn, plus food trucks offering more substantial fare for purchase, for man cannot live on ice cream and popcorn alone (though some have tried!)

Closed-toe shoes are required for tours, so leave the flip flops at home or be disappointed. It’s all free; go here for more information including off-site parking with shuttles to the Southerly Plant.
